Informations

Uganda Peoples Defence Force (UPDF) is the Uganda's armed forces. It was previously called the National Resistance Army. The International Institute for Strategic Studies estimates that the UPDF's total strength was between 40,000 and 45,000. It consisted of both land forces and an aerial wing. The British retained the majority of high-ranking military commands after Uganda gained independence in October 1962.

This policy was criticized by rank-and-file Ugandans who claimed it prevented them from being promoted and kept their salaries low. These complaints led to the destabilization of the already weak armed forces. Each post-independence government increased the size of its army by recruiting from within one region or ethnic group. Every government also employed military force to subdue unrest.
