Informations

The Royal Netherlands Army was given the task of defending Suriname after the establishment of the Statute in the Kingdom of Netherlands. However, the Royal Netherlands Navy was responsible for the defense of the Netherlands Antilles. The army established a separate Netherlands Armed Forces (Dutch Troepenmacht, TRIS) in Suriname. This force was transformed into the Surinamese Armed Forces, or Surinamese Krijgsmacht (SKM) upon independence in 1975. A group of 15 non-commissioned officers, one junior officer and one sergeant major Desi Bouterse led by one senior officer staged a coup d'état and overthrew government on February 25, 1980.

The SKM was renamed the National Army (Nationaal Leger), NL. Since 1991's election of a democratic government, the Netherlands has only provided limited military support to the Surinamese Armed Forces. The United States has been training military officers and policymakers in recent years to help them better understand the role of military personnel within a civilian government. The Peoples Republic of China, along with Brazil, has donated military equipment and logistical materials to the Surinamese Armed Forces since the mid-1990s.
