Informations

The Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, (RSLAF), are the armed forces of Sierra Leone. They are responsible for the security of Sierra Leone's borders and protecting the national interests of Sierra Leone within the framework of the 1991 Sierra Leone Constitution. After independence in 1961, the armed forces were created using elements from the British Royal West African Frontier Force. These elements were then present in the Sierra Leone Colony, Protectorate. The Sierra Leone Armed Forces was composed of approximately 13,000 people in 2010. In 1968, the armed forces took control and brought the National Reformation Council to power. The Republic of Sierra Leone Military Force (RSLMF) was established on the 19th April 1971 when Sierra Leone became an independent republic. The RSLMF was a single service organization until 1979, when the Sierra Leone Navy came into being. The RSLMF remained largely unchanged over 16 years, until 1995 when Defence Headquarters was established.

In that year, the Sierra Leone Air Wing or SLAW was formed. After that, the Armed Forces of the Republic of Sierra Leone was renamed the RSLMF (AFRSL). The Chief of Defence Staff is the head of the Sierra Leone Armed Forces. He is the legally highest ranking military officer in the Sierra Leone Army. The Constitution gives the President of Sierra Leone the power to remove the Chief of Defence Staff from the Sierra Leone Armed Forces. Major General Brima Ssay is the current Chief of Defence Staff for the Sierra Leone Armed Forces. He was appointed by President Ernest Bai Koroma. On 30 November 2017, Major Sesay succeeded Major General John Milton as Chief of Defence Staff for the Sierra Leone Armed Forces. President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah declared in January 2002 that the Sierra Leone Army would be unified and the small Sierra Leone Air Force, as well as the moribund Sierra Leone Navy, to create a reconstituted force known the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces.
