Informations

The national security forces of Panama are the Panamanian Public Forces (Spanish Fuerza Publica de la Republica de Panama). Panama is the second Latin American country (Costa Rica being the other) to abolish all standing armies. Panama still has a small paramilitary force. The U.S. invaded Panama in 1989 to overthrow a military dictatorship that ruled Panama from 1968 through 1989.

Manuel Noriega was the last military dictator. He had been hostile to the U.S. and led to the death of a U.S. Marine lieutenant. Panama has armed police, internal security forces and small air and sea forces. They are responsible for law enforcement, and they can also perform limited military operations. They have been reporting to the Ministry of Public Security since 2010.
