The military dictatorship of Nigeria was when the Nigerian Armed Forces took power from 1966 to 1999. There was an interregnum between 1979 and 1983. With the tacit support and assistance of the elite through coup detats, the military was often able to rise in power.

There have been several military coups in Nigeria since 1963 when Nigeria became a republic.
