It currently has 939 soldiers. The grand duke is the commander-in-chief. Francois Bausch is currently the minister for defense and oversees all army operations. The Chief of Defence is the professional head of the army. He answers to the minister, and holds the rank general.

Luxembourg has been a participant in the Eurocorps and contributed troops to UNPROFOR and IFOR missions. It also participated in the NATO SFOR mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina. To support ISAF, Luxembourg troops have been deployed to Afghanistan. The army also took part in humanitarian relief missions, such as the establishment of refugee camps for Kurds or emergency supplies for Albania.
