The Armed Forces of Liberia are the armed forces of Republic of Liberia. Its origins can be traced back to a militia formed in Liberia by the first black colonists. The Liberian Frontier Force was established in 1908 and renamed in 1956. The AFL has had a lot of training and materiel assistance from the United States for almost its entire history. The majority of training provided by the United States was from 1941 to 1989. However, this has not prevented the generally low effectiveness of most of the armed forces of the developing world.
The AFL was not active during the Cold War. A reinforced company group, however, was sent to ONUC, Democratic Republic of the Congo, in the 1960s.
