Informations

The Armed Forces of Liberia are the armed forces of Republic of Liberia. Its origins can be traced back to a militia formed in Liberia by the first black colonists. The Liberian Frontier Force was established in 1908 and renamed in 1956. The AFL has had a lot of training and materiel assistance from the United States for almost its entire history. The majority of training provided by the United States was from 1941 to 1989. However, this has not prevented the generally low effectiveness of most of the armed forces of the developing world. The AFL was not active during the Cold War. A reinforced company group, however, was sent to ONUC, Democratic Republic of the Congo, in the 1960s.

The First Liberian Civil War, which began in 1989, changed this. The conflict lasted from 1989 to 1996-1997 and then the Second Liberian Civil War which lasted between 1999 and 2003. The AFL includes two infantry battalions as well as a Service Support Company and a Military Police Company. It also includes a Logistics Command and the Liberian Coast Guard. A Nigerian Army officer was the head of the armed force for many years following the war. After President Weah's election, Prince C. Johnson III was made Chief of Staff and promoted to Major General. Geraldine George became Deputy Chief, and was promoted to Brigadier General.
