The Italian Armed Forces (Italian forze armate italiane), include the Italian Army and Navy, as well as the Italian Air Force. The fourth branch of the armed force, the Carabinieri is the nation's military police. They also participate in operations and missions abroad as a combat force. The Guardia di Finanza, although not a armed force branch, has military status and is based on military principles.



These five forces total 341,250 soldiers and civilians with active military status. 165,500 of them are in the Army Navy Air Force and Navy. As the President of Article 87 of the Constitution of Italy, the President of Italy is responsible for the management of the Armed Forces. Article 78 states that the Parliament is empowered to declare war and give the necessary powers to the Government.
