The President of Ireland is the Supreme Commander of Defence Forces. The President is the Chief of Defence Forces. However, all Defence Forces officers are commissioned by the President.

In practice, the Minister of Defence acts for the President and reports to the Government of Ireland. The Council of Defence advises the Minister of Defence in relation to the affairs of the Department of Defence.
