The largest number of active troops in the Middle East is held by the Iranian Armed Forces. Iran's military forces include approximately 610,000 personnel on active duty and 350,000 trained and reserve personnel who can be mobilized as needed. This brings the total number of personnel in Iran's military to 960,000. These figures do not include the Law Enforcement Force and Basij.
The majority of Iran's import weapons are American-made systems, which were purchased prior to the 1979 Islamic Revolution. However, there have been limited purchases made from the Soviet Union during the 1990s after the Iran-Iraq War.
