Informations

The Armed Forces of Azerbaijan, Azerbaijani: Az@rbaycan Silahli Qv@l@ri), were reestablished in accordance with the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan concerning the Armed Forces. It was established on 9 October 1991. Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR), which had its own armed forces formed in June 1918, was disbanded after Azerbaijan became part of the Soviet Union and the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic on 28 April 1920. The Soviet Union was disintegrated in 1991-1992. After that, the armed forces were rebuilt using Soviet equipment and bases. There are three types of armed forces: the Azerbaijani Land Forces and Azerbaijani Air and Air Defence Forces. The Azerbaijani Navy is the third.

The Azerbaijani National Guard and the Internal Troops of Azerbaijan are some of the associated forces. They can also be used in state defense, but only under certain circumstances. According to Azerbaijani media sources, the 2009 military expenditures in Azerbaijan were US$2.46 Billion. However, according to Stockholm International Peace Research Institute only $1.473 Billion was spent that year. IISS suggests that defense spending in 2009 was $1.5 million. Azerbaijan's Ministry of Defence Industry oversees the production, regulation, and maintenance of military equipment. Azerbaijan plans to build tanks, armored vehicles and military planes in the future.
