The Australian Defence Force is the military organization responsible for the defense of Australia's Commonwealth and national interests. It is comprised of the Royal Australian Navy, Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), as well as several tri-service units. The ADF is made up of approximately 85,000 full-time personnel, active reservists, and is supported by several civilian agencies and the Department of Defence.
The Australian Government created the armed services in separate organizations during the early decades of the 20th Century. Each service had its own chain of command. The government made a strategic shift in 1976 and created the ADF to bring all services under one headquarters.
