The Peoples Democratic Republic of Algeria's military force is called the Algerian Peoples National Army. It is the direct successor to the National Liberation Army, the arm of the National Liberation Front that fought French colonial rule in the Algerian War of Independence (1954-1962).
The Peoples National Army includes the Algerian Land Forces and the Algerian Air Force. It also includes the Navy (Marine de la Republique Algerienne) and the Algerian Air Defence Force. The army's antecedents were conventional military units that were formed in Tunisia and Morocco during the war for independence from France.
