Linz (; German: [ˈlɪnts]; Czech: Linec) is the capital city of Upper Austria and third-largest city in Austria. It is located in the country's northern part, on the Danube 30 kilometres (19 miles) south of the Czech border. In 2018, the population was 204,846.From 1945 to 1955, Linz was divided, with the city north of the Danube occupied by the Soviets and to the south of it by the Americans.



In 2009, it was a European Capital of Culture; it is a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. Linz is known for its Linzer torte.

Novo Hamburgo (Portuguese for New Hamburg; German: Neu-Hamburg) is a municipality in the southernmost Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, located in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre, the state capital. As of 2018, its population was 246,452. The city covers an area of 217 km2 (84 sq mi), and the average temperature is 19 °C (66 °F), which is mild for the region. The Sinos River runs through the urban area. Consolidated by German immigrants, the city was named after Hamburg, Germany.



Novo Hamburgo's population is still predominantly of German descent. In the 1980s, Novo Hamburgo received the nickname of "the national capital of shoes", attracting many athletes, tracks and companies connected to the sport. Nowadays, the city is the industrial centre of the Sinos River Valley, the economy of which is based mainly on the manufacture of shoes and the associated leather goods supply chain.
