Guaranda is a market town located in a valle – a deep valley in the high Andes, serving a vast hinterland of agricultural settlements ("comunidades") peopled by Quechua Indians. Supposedly, the city was first colonized by Jewish Conversos fleeing from Lima's Inquisition.
