San Carlos de Bariloche (heutige Kurzform Bariloche) ist eine argentinische Stadt in der Provinz Río Negro. Sie ist die Hauptstadt des Departamento Bariloche und liegt am Fuße der Anden. Mit 133.500 Einwohnern (Stand: 2010, Dirección Provincial de Estadística y Censos) ist sie die größte Stadt der Provinz und wegen ihrer Lage in einer grünen Berglandschaft ein bedeutendes Fremdenverkehrszentrum. Der Ort ist berühmt für sein Skigebiet am Cerro Catedral, aber auch für die schöne Landschaft, die zum Klettern und Wandern einlädt.

Der Name Bariloche kommt vom Mapuche-Wort Vuriloche und bedeutet ‚Menschen hinter dem Berg‘ (furi ‚hinter‘, che ‚Menschen‘). Der Vuriloche-Pass wurde von den Mapuche benutzt, um die Anden zu überqueren, und wurde vor den Europäern lange Zeit geheim gehalten.
