Osijek [ˈɔsjɛk] (deutsch Esseg, Essegg oder Essek, ungarisch Eszék) ist die viertgrößte Stadt Kroatiens. Sie ist Verwaltungssitz der Gespanschaft Osijek-Baranja (kroatisch Osječko-baranjska županija) und wirtschaftliches und kulturelles Zentrum der historischen Region Slawonien. Osijek liegt am Ufer der Drau im Osten von Slawonien, rund 20 Kilometer vor der Mündung der Drau in die Donau, und hatte 2011 bei der Volkszählung 108.048 Einwohner. Die Stadt hat mehrere einst eigenständige Zentren: Die Altstadt oder Festung (kr.

Tvrđa), die Oberstadt (Gornji grad), heute das eigentliche Zentrum, und die Unterstadt (Donji grad). Neben vielen Museen und Theatern besitzt Osijek auch eine Universität, die Josip-Juraj-Strossmayer-Universität Osijek. Osijek besitzt eine große Anzahl von Parks. In der Nähe befinden sich der Naturpark Kopački rit, eines der größten naturbelassenen Sumpfgebiete in Europa, und die Weinstädte Erdut, sowie Kneževi Vinogradi.
