Ihr Name (spanisch für Himmelfahrt, Aufstieg) steht für Mariä Himmelfahrt, ihr voller Name lautet La Muy Noble y Leal Ciudad de Nuestra Señora Santa Maria de la Asunción.

Der Ballungsraum Asunción hat rund 1,9 Millionen Einwohner. Ihre Bezeichnung in der Landessprache Guaraní ist Paraguay (nicht zu verwechseln mit Paraguái, dem Landesnamen auf Guaraní).
